You may remember us as “ELH Law”, where Ms. Ember-Leigh Hamilton was the sole practitioner for over two decades; that is, until a couple of years ago when she gratefully took Mr. Shawn Ferron under her wing. As Ms. Hamilton moves on to her well-deserved retirement, she has entrusted Mr. Ferron to carry on in her footsteps.
Welcome to Ferron Legal,
a boutique firm dedicated to
serving the community of Cobourg and surrounding areas.
Since taking over in 2023, Mr. Ferron has wasted no time — between the relocation and expansion of the practice, it’s hard to believe he still has time to see clients; but he does! In fact, when he isn’t in court, Shawn spends the majority of his workday in meetings or otherwise communicating with current and prospective clients. This has allowed him to develop and maintain an impressive roster of private and legal aid clients. But, we would be remiss to discuss his accomplishments without acknowledging the backbone of the firm, our talented legal assistants.

Since the beginning, ELH Law has provided professional legal expertise along with superior personalized service, empathy, and compassion; and we want to assure you that at Ferron Legal, we remain committed to maintaining the outstanding reputation Ember-Leigh Hamilton has earned serving the Northumberland County for over 25 years.

FAQs
-
To retain a lawyer is to officially hire them, thereby creating a solicitor-client relationship that is solidified by a retainer agreement. Even if you have spoken to a lawyer, you are not bound to a lawyer-client relationship and thus they do not represent you in your matter until you retain them.
-
Both lawyers and legal assistants play an integral role in the functioning of a firm as they are both qualified to assist you with your legal matters and possess a wealth of information. However, the extent and type of information they can provide differs.
Accordingly, while a legal assistant cannot give you legal advice, they can answer many procedural questions, and their billing rate is much lower. For example, the legal assistant can tell you if your ex-partner has served their reply to your application, but the legal assistant cannot advise you on how to respond.
Ultimately, a legal assistant is to a lawyer what a nurse is to a doctor or a dental hygienist is to a dentist – they’re all fundamental in providing the quality of service you deserve!

Yes! Ferron Legal believes in the notion that everyone is deserving of adept legal representation and accepting legal aid certificates is one way to demonstrate that.
Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is a program designed to ensure that all Ontarians have access to legal representation, regardless of their economic status. Whether or not someone initially qualifies for legal aid depends largely on their income-level. However, in order to obtain and maintain a legal aid certificate you must also satisfy the conditions laid out in the LAO’s merit assessment. For more information on the LAO’s eligibility requirements, please visit their website.

There are limited circumstances where the court recognizes a need to tend to a matter immediately and will thus grant an urgent motion.
Situations that may be considered urgent by the court include but are not limited to instances where you can prove that:
There is an immediate risk that your partner will take your child(ren) away or seriously harm you or your child(ren).
Your partner is not complying with a parenting agreement and withholding your child(ren).
You will face undue hardship by prolonging the matter because you do not have enough money to pay your bills and your debtors have threatened to take legal action against you.
For more information on urgent motions, visit the Ontario Government’s Steps to Justice website.
